Dr. Peter Molan and his research team at the Honey Research Unit at New Zealand's Waikato University found in some specific strains of manuka honey a second natural more powerful and more stable antibacterial property called Unique Manuka Factor (UMF).

Please find below the main scientific data obtained from Dr. Peter Molan research, which we are referring kindly from Dr. Peter Molan permission.

Active Manuka honeys contains an additional antibacterial component found only in Manuka honey produced from Leptospermum plants. This component has been called by Dr. Peter Molan as a "Unique Manuka Factor" (UMF).

The antibacterial property is a phytochemical property meaning it is a floral derived property coming from the nectar of some manuka flowers. For this reason it is in only some specific strains of manuka honey. The hydrogen peroxide antibacterial property is from the enzyme glucose oxidase which the bees have added to the honey and honey became active.

Please see below Manuka honey activity scale, in according to Certificate of Analysis from Gribbles Laboratory:

Manuka honey activity scale
High activity
>15%
Medium Activity
10-15%
Low activity
8.2 -10%
Not detectable
< 8.2 %.

Thus, research conducted by Dr. Peter Molan MBE of Waikato University has discovered two types of Manuka Honey:

1. Ordinary Manuka honey with only the hydrogen peroxide antibacterial property common to most honeys ( < 8.2% ) . Ordinary Manuka honey is very nice and taste table honey.

2. Active Manuka Honeys, which became active only when level of non-peroxide activity is more than 8.2%.

Thus, Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) reflects Manuka Activity level.

Studies are showing, that Active Manuka Honey with high levels of non-peroxide activity ( UMF ) could be very effective in:

-digestive support

- support sore throats

- oral hygiene

More information about healing properties of Active Manuka honeys and research of these properties you can find from Waikato Honey Research Centre.
